2013 Tax Season is in Full Force

2013 Tax Season is in Full Force
The IRS began accepting 2013 individual tax returns on Friday, January 31st, officially kicking off the tax season. As you may have read in some of our earlier posts, the IRS had postponted this date due to the two-week federal government shut down.

The IRS is kicking off this tax season with a new Commisoner in office, John Koskinen, who was recently just approved by Congress. Among many other items, the new IRS commisioner has been focusing on budget cuts. Due to some of these cuts, the IRS is not offering taxpayers the option to file their returns at a walk-in taxpayer assistance center for 2013 tax season. The IRS is instead encouraging individuals to take advantage of VITA, also known as the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, which is staffed nationwide by volunteers and accounting students.

In addition to a new IRS Commissoner, the IRS has a new feature this year for 2013 tax season. It is the ability for those making less than $58,000 a year to select from one of 14 partners the IRS has teamed up with for the Free File prgoram.

You can learn more about the 2013 tax season and the IRS' Free File program on their website, at IRS.gov.

Tips For Tax Season!

Tips For Tax Season!
As tax season approaches and you begin to think about getting to work on your return, the Internal Revenue Service has issued a warning for all tax payers to beware of tax scams! Schemes vary from email refund scams to phone calls from people soliciting sensitive information posing as IRS agents and more. The IRS will never contact you for personal or sensitive tax or financial information via email, so make sure to be diligent with that kind of information.
Some basic tips to stay on top of tax season and avoid tax-related scams are:
  • Don’t carry your Social Security card on you
  • Secure personal information that you keep in your home
  • Protect information on your computer with regular password changes and by using firewalls and anti-virus software
  • Don’t give out your personal information unless you are sure of the person you are dealing with
  • Conduct regular credit checks by getting an annual credit report
And, of course, contact your local Denver accountants at Bloch Rothman and Associates for all tax assistance. Whether you are new to filing your taxes or consider yourself a seasoned veteran, our team of tax professionals in Denver will guide you through the process and make it easy and efficient. Call our office today to speak with one of our tax preparers at (303) 321.7160. We look forward to working with you!
